Claerwen James

Claerwen James

Born in 1970, Claerwen James was already painting while she read zoology at Oxford, although at that time her scientific subject was her first calling. After graduation she did research in molecular biology with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and was a visiting researcher at Cold Spring Harbor in the US. She took a Ph.D. but had realised quite early in her post-graduate career that painting would occupy the centre of her life. While she was enrolled at the Slade School her emphasis changed from abstract to figurative. A solo show of her recent paintings at Flowers Gallery in Cork Street in early 2006 sold out. She is preparing for another exhibition at the same gallery in 2007. Some of her images can be seen on the Flowers East website. She is married to the scholar Jonathan Grove and lives in Cambridge.
