Patrick Stewart

Clive James on DVD

Always the most interesting thing about successful actors in long-running television starring roles is how they balance their careers so as not to be overwhelmed by the character they have become famous for playing. Patrick Stewart is resigned to hearing “Let it be so” from every stranger (stupidly, I said it myself in this interview) but he is determined to keep a creative life going, and in his spare time is often out on the road with a one-man show, or starring in stage productions of Shakespeare. The depressing thing, from his angle, is how little spare time he has. Television production schedules are crushing, a fact which lurks in the background of our conversation.
